Question: The multimedia display in my Mercedes keeps telling me that an update is available, but I don’t know what to do. How do I perform a Mercedes infotainment system update?

Answer: You can update your Mercedes-Benz infotainment system in a few ways, depending on the software update. If your model supports automatic online updates, you can select this method, which will download and install the updates for you.

You can also install them via your vehicle’s multimedia display. The vehicle must be turned off and cannot be used during the software update installation. To complete the update, follow these instructions:

  • Press the “Settings” button on your Mercedes’ multimedia display screen.
  • Find the “Systems” tab and press it.
  • Scroll until you find the “Software update” tab and press it.
  • Select the update you wish to install and press “Download.”

Confirm the download if necessary and wait until the download finishes. Once the download is complete, it will begin the installation process. As long as you follow these instructions, you should have no trouble performing a Mercedes infotainment system software update.

Some updates require a wifi hotspot with a strong connection. The installation will not work if the wifi network is encrypted. Online updates are available for control units, locking features, driver assistance technology and the newer MBUX multimedia system, to name a few. These updates can be found through the communication module on the display. You can protect the security of your car by implementing a PIN for updates.

If you have an older model and cannot complete the update over air, you can take your car to an authorized Mercedes-Benz technician or dealer to perform the software update for you. Going to a professional means they can make sure the update is done properly.

Importance of the Mercedes infotainment system

It’s important to keep your Mercedes-Benz infotainment system up to date as this will ensure better performance for your car and mitigate security risks and flaws. This digital system, named after a play on words information and entertainment, controls a number of features important to your car’s functionality.

Some are:

  • Connectivity functions
  • Driver assistance
  • Radio and audio streaming
  • GPS navigation
  • Performance and driving insights
  • Traffic alerts
  • Weather updates
  • Climate control

The software updates can help with engine performance and fuel efficiency, and improve safety features like blind-spot assistance technology. Some updates are intended to fix bugs in the software, too.

Mercedes rolls out new options and changes with each infotainment generation.
In 2024, some Mercedes models were eligible for more high-end features on its MBUX infotainment generation like in-vehicle games, capabilities to display digital artwork, also known as NFTs, and an AI voice assistant.

In mid-2024, some models also were eligible for Sound Drive, an interactive system that changes sounds to match the driver’s driving. Soft music plays when the driver slows down, and upbeat tunes will initiate when the car goes at a higher speed.

Whether you drive a newer or older Mercedes model, keeping your infotainment system updated is key. You can schedule the update installations with your technician or dealer.
